WatchWatch
(Let me know if this video doesn’t work.) The teacher who took over my classes made this video of some of my old kindies.  I miss them!  Hopefully I will be able to make it to their graduation in February.

"2MB"
jessicainkorea: Today I learned that the nickname many Koreans have for their current president, Lee Myung-bak, is “2 Megabytes”: as in, he so dumb that’s how much his brain can process. Claims my students made about Lee Myung-bak: Apparently, he’s imported mad cow disease into Korea. (I looked this up, they’re freaking out because President Lee is allowing US beef to be imported to Korea and...

It is possible my sister will be living in South America next year, so I was reading about random places down there because I would definitely go visit her.  I found something really bizarre in the Wikitravel article on Georgetown, Guyana: “Movie star Pauly Shore has a party mansion called the Class Act after his 1992 movie of the same name. The mansion is situated on the outskirts of town...

Class of '04!!@@!~~!1
Tonight I found out that a guy from my high school class invented the Shot Bong (check it out here).  He was actually a really smart and cool guy, so it’s weird to imagine him basing his life’s work around something so bro-y. Pretty much everyone else either has kids and/or is married.  Can’t wait until the reunion.

Avatar depression (CNN link) →
This sounds completely ridiculous if you haven’t seen this movie, but Samir and I went with two of his friends and we could totally understand why, haha.  Pandora is so pretty!  I thought this movie was going to be terrible, based solely on the trailer I saw months ago, but it really is awesome and I want to see it again.

therealericchoi: Thirdly, I honestly have no idea how to make my comments work, but don’t they have that new message system for tumblr users? But, I actually have no idea how that works either so… To add comments, use disqus.com.  I don’t know why tumblr hasn’t added their own yet? Also, aren’t you supposed to be working?  As in, teaching children instead of playing on...

Korean lulz of the day: my director thinks I'm...
jgh2: jessicainkorea: I had to get another health checkup today because my health checkup last week was just a drug test. So they weighed me, lol. Right afterwards my director was like, “It’s OK, you can lose the weight quickly in Korea, Americans eat a lot of food.” I think I’m supposed to be offended, but the cultural difference from America - where a boss could be fired for saying such a...

"To Reconcile the Koreas, Teenagers Show a Way"... →
The “Weekend Program for South and North Korean Teenagers Together” was begun last August by the Rev. Benjamin H. Yoon, 80, head of the Citizens’ Alliance for North Korean Human Rights. “Although we share the same genes, South and North Koreans live like completely different peoples, with different accents, different ways of thinking and behaving,” said Mr. Yoon. “We forgot that before Korea...

I had no idea Daul Kim had killed herself in November.  Omg. I was reading this article about K-pop fans sending letters written in blood to their idols (then there’s also this gem of a story—I have no words).  That led me to this list of countries listed by their suicide rates, which I think is outdated because Korea is now higher than Japan.  Then this article that specifically...

The 31 Places to Go in 2010 (NYT link) →
3. Seoul Forget Tokyo. Design aficionados are now heading to Seoul. They have been drawn by the Korean capital’s glammed-up cafes and restaurants, immaculate art galleries and monumental fashion palaces like the sprawling outpost of Milan’s 10 Corso Como and the widely noted Ann Demeulemeester store — an avant-garde Chia Pet covered in vegetation. And now Seoul, under its design-obsessed mayor,...

questions for america
1.  Why do we think we’re so good at recycling?  Like at fast food restaurants, where are the recycling slots for the lids and straws, and the one for the cups (like there is in Korea)?  Why do we get free plastic bags with every tiny purchase? 2.  Why are all the girls so unseasonably tan here? 3.  Why do we think it’s ludicrous to dress up dogs, but it is completely normal to have...

Noisy Korean Tourists Overseas Irk Foreigners... →
NONE of this surprises me. Foreigners are most turned off by noisy Koreans during their overseas trips, especially inside airplanes and in hotel rooms, the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) said Wednesday. Many also said that Koreans need to pay more attention to the customs, culture and people of the countries they are visiting. They include refraining from shouting or talking loudly at airports,...
