One of my favorite pics from my bday celebration. Photo bomb!
After living in Korea, I forget that I turn a year older (in the Western world) on my birthday. Here, everyone turns a year older on January 1st (and are born 1 year old), so on New Year’s Day I turned 26. And today I turn 25 in America. So it always takes several seconds to figure out how old I am whenever someone asks, as if remembering one age weren’t hard enough..!
- A letter from my grandma. I am always shocked to hear that people my age have grandparents who own computers and cell phones. ”Wait, your grandma doesn’t write you letters?”
- A package from my mom. Inside were various trip things I requested: fast-drying travel towel, antibacterial wet wipes, Lush shampoo bars, etc., PLUS lots of home-made food. At the bottom was a box full of chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting and sprinkles that had survived the long journey pretty well. When I opened the box, I almost peed. They are sooo good.
- A package from Dave. Count Chocula!!!, really good chocolate, and a community-produced San Francisco planner with events for the year and artwork done by people who live there. Sweet!
- A massive headache from having to do tests today that are horribly designed by people who seem to have never taught children in their life. Awful. We had a meeting to discuss the logistics of it and at one point the head teacher said, “This syllabus was made by headquarters. They know what they are doing.” Which led to an eruption of laughter from the rest of us. Hilarious. They are idiots.
- And I will certainly have a stomachache after all the crap I wolfed down the second I got home. Whatever, it’s my birthday. I can eat cupcakes for dinner.
