My office is right around the corner, so a co-worker and I hit up the free first Tuesday of the month at SF MoMA over lunch today.  Prettyyy sweet.

Today I took advantage of the free day (the third Wednesday of every month) at the California Academy of Sciences.  I knew nothing about it before I went, and was super excited to see that there was an aquarium!  It is a pretty awesome place, and I definitely want to check out one of their Thursday night Nightlife events.

I’m sitting at the Hong Kong Museum of Art (museums are free on Wednesdays!), looking across to the famous skyline on Hong Kong Island, and watching boats go by. It is so strange, after having wanted to see this view for ages—seeing Wong Kar-Wai movies a few years ago made me desperately want to visit HK—and now I’m actually here. It is all much smaller than I had imagined.

saturday fun day

Yesterday I met up with Jessica in Hongdae, and we ended up having quite a fun time.  First, we were on a mission to find a bar for the next Tumblr meet-up and as we were walking around we found a super cute and tiny cupcake shop.  So we got some for my and Kelly’s mini birthday celebration that would be happening later.

Yum.

Then we ate Taco Bell, yum, and went to this little museum/gallery place where they have an exhibit of interactive paintings that appear 3D.  It is hidden pretty well in the basement of a sketchy building that is also home to a lock shop and a billiards hall, so we finding it was a little hard.  But it was a lot of fun and was totally set up as a photo-op opportunity for Koreans—specifically couples—since they LOVE nothing more than taking pictures of themselves.

There were “photo point” stickers to direct you to the best place to stand when shooting pics.

Started out innocently enough.  Just a naked baby drinking wine and peeing… you know.

Ddong jim!

:O

There were people working there whose only job was to take photos.

Money!!!  Can you believe this was all painted only on the floor and wall?!  It looks so crazy.

Then we got some coffee and Jessica took some instax photos with her awesome camera (that everyone seems to have now and I can’t wait to get one when I’m back home)!

And we said goodbye to Hongdae.  Sigh.  That will probably be my last afternoon spent there, not that there were many, but this area is one of my favorites in the entire world and I will miss it like crazy.

Saturday I went to the Calligraphy Museum at the Seoul Arts Center and the National Museum of Korea.  I’ve really fallen in love with all kinds of traditional Korean art, and I love that museum for the folk paintings and pottery.  It is also free, which makes it even more awesome.

Saturday evening, a few of us went to the Flea Market at Platoon.  It was pretty fun, but—like the rest of Seoul—crowded.  So we didn’t stay too long, and ended up in Itaewon… drinking… dancing… kebab-eating…!  Jessica and her friend Olivia just stayed at my place since they live kind of far, so then this morning after Olivia ran off to go tutor, Jessica and I headed to Sinsa/Garosu-gil for a nice lunch, followed by the Seoul Design Festival at the Jamsil Sports Complex.

It was so cool!  It goes on until Thursday, so if you haven’t already, check it out!  There’s a ton to see, and pretty much any kind of design you can think of is represented.

Around the stadium, each of the 25 gu (districts of the city) had set up a different green display, then inside, around the whole circumference, there were all kinds of set-ups to check out and things to buy.  As you would expect in Korea, most of it was very cuuute.  It was hard not to buy a ton of stuff.  Anyway, it was awesome, and more info can be found here.
