Hola~
I just went to the post office and shipped everything on the slow boat. It took 2 months, cost about 24,000 for each 7 kg box, and everything arrived alright EXCEPT one box that was ripped open and missing a ton of inexpensive but special to me jewelry and at least five pairs of shoes. :(
Otherwise, it was totally awesome and cheap!
- Bathrooms - No matter where you are in Seoul, a bathroom is close by. This may not sound like a big deal, but for anyone who has traveled, being able to find a bathroom when you really “need” a bathroom can be a problem if you aren’t in a “touristy” part of town (and you aren’t a…
This is all true!

This is great. I miss you and your subway (but mostly the buses), Seoul!

I’m going to Chicago for the next few days to see a bunch of friends, and will also celebrate the 4th of July in for the first time in America since 2008! :O
Naturally, I’m quite excited for all of this, but am also seriously going to miss the Seoul Tumblr meet-up. It probably doesn’t help that I just watched a ton of Big Bang videos, but I miss Seoul sooo much and I would love nothing more than to be able to stay out all night in Hongdae. Have fun at the meet-up, guys (but not too much -_-)!
After 14 hours on several modes of transportation, I made it to BKK yesterday. Once here, I walked around, got a banana and nutella pancake, and drank beer with a French guy I met in Borneo. We had been emailing occassionally in case our paths would cross again, and I’m glad they did because it was fun to see him.
Today over our muesli-yogurt-fruit-for-$1 breakfast, he asked me if Bangkok was anything like Seoul. I said it wasn’t, but while out and about today I realized it totally is very similar to the seedier parts of north-of-the-Han Seoul.
Seoul and Bangkok are on the same level of outdoor cleanliness I’d say, people dress very well in both cities, they have good public transportation, and there are very high-end areas in both that feel a little out-of-place from a Western point of view. (Or maybe just mine. Both of these cities developed super-fast so they didn’t have an original fancy region of the city to put the designer shops, restaurants, and housing, so it’s all kind of crammed into neighborhoods that are otherwise not very remarkable.)
I love both cities, but there are quite a few categories that Bangkok wins:
Diversity (nationalities, ethnicities, food, public sexual identities)
Prices for probably everything
Shopping. I planned it so I’d be here for the weekend market because it’s so amazing. Thinking I had spent way too much money on the several gifts and things I had bought, I felt guilty until I added it up and I only spent $15. That would go nowhere in Seoul.
7 Elevens have fountain drinks and toasted sandwiches for less than $1
No horrible freezing winters that last half the year
I could go on, but don’t want Seoul to feel jealous (although it beats the shit out of BKK for nightlife!). I will love Seoul forever, but Bangkok also has a very special place in my heart.
